The Citation Group acquires PayCaptain to expand its compliance platform into UK payroll

[16 June 2026]  The Citation Group, a leading international provider of compliance software and services for SMEs, has acquired PayCaptain, the award-winning payroll software and managed services provider trusted by hundreds of UK employers.

Founded by Simon Bocca in 2020, PayCaptain combines modern payroll technology with specialist in-house support and stands out for the quality of service.

PayCaptain, the world's first B Corporation-certified payroll provider, has nearly doubled its year-on-year revenue and achieved a 98% customer retention rate. It combines modern technology with in-house payroll expertise. Its service focuses on the experience of both employers and employees.

Its flexible model gives employers greater control through a modern, AI-enabled platform. This includes smart automation, analytics and reporting.

The acquisition adds payroll, the most universal compliance obligation, to Citation’s technology and advisory services. Citation already supports SMEs across workforce compliance and risk. Its services include HR, employment law, health & safety, workforce management, ISO accreditation, cybersecurity, eLearning and employee screening.

Employers can choose between using PayCaptain as a standalone software solution or have the reassurance of a fully managed payroll service. PayCaptain’s CIPP-qualified experts can manage payroll without the need for an in-house payroll team.

PayCaptain’s capabilities will be integrated with Citation’s HR and Workforce Management software over the coming months. This will bring payroll and workforce compliance together within one connected solution. The combination of smart software and expert support gives businesses one trusted partner for payroll and compliance.

PayCaptain’s employee mobile payroll app lets workers see their earnings build in real time. They can access free emergency pay advances, create salary savings and understand their pay in plain language. The platform also includes an in-app AI assistant, custom analytics and intelligent reporting. These tools reduce administration for employers and support employees’ financial wellbeing.

PayCaptain will operate as a dedicated payroll division within The Citation Group, led by Managing Director Simon Bocca. Existing clients will see no changes to their service, platform or support.

The acquisition follows Citation’s purchase of Australian payroll software provider foundU in 2025. It reflects the Group’s plans to build a leading global payroll service alongside its compliance platform.
